Between 32 and 56 percent of male drivers died in crashes related to drunk driving from 1982 to 2017. This percentage over the same period ranges from 29 to 51 percent for female drivers. Motor vehicle accidents occur on country roads 2.5 times more often than on non-rural roads. For example, urban areas in the Northeastern United States have 3.5 deaths for every 100,000 people, while rural areas have 10.8 fatalities for every 100,000 persons.

A study by the NHTSA suggests that seat belts saved the lives of almost 15,000 people in 2017. Over 2,500 people’s lives could have been saved had they been wearing a seatbelt. Forty-seven percent of people not wearing safety belts during an accident suffered fatal injuries.
