What Is a Power of Attorney?

Carla from Elmhurst asks, what is a power of attorney? A power of attorney is a legal document that allows someone to act on your behalf in the event you are unable to. It can be very limited — for example, to sell a car on a given date – or very broad and durable, surviving your own incapacity. Often, powers of attorney are used with the elderly in the event they are physically or mentally incapacitated and can’t manage their financial affairs.
Who you choose as your agent is very important. And while they owe a fiduciary responsibility to you, you must be able to trust who is acting as your agent through the power of attorney.
