Read the fine print.
How many times have you heard that expression? The fine print is the part of any legal contract that usually contains the most important binding language, but it’s also the part most of us prefer to gloss over or ignore completely. Many people do not read the fine print because it can be lengthy, contain unfamiliar words or phrases, or is written in a way that is intentionally misleading. However, it is very important to carefully evaluate every word of a legal document so that you are completely aware of what you are signing.
It is always best to have an attorney’s advice when trying to decipher a legal document. Even if you do have an attorney, it is still important for you to understand what you are reading. Read the document slowly. Many misunderstandings occur because people rush through documents that have major impacts on their lives. Look for keywords that are repeated in the document, and don’t be afraid to ask your attorney to explain words or phrases you don’t understand. A good attorney will be willing to go over your document with you as many times as you need to be fully comfortable with its contents.
Question everything. It is much better to take a little extra time familiarizing yourself with a document before you sign it, rather than trying to change something once it is too late. Once you are completely satisfied that you understand what it says and your attorney gives you the green light, then you may sign it. Put it in a safe place and relax because you have taken a smart, responsible approach to your legal matters.
