Civil Trial Still Ahead in BP Oil Spill Case

The buck doesn’t necessarily stop at the record $4.5 billion fine that BP this week agreed to pay for the historic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The petroleum company might be liable for billions of dollars more as the result of an upcoming civil case, in addition to prompting lawmakers to take a serious look at placing more regulations on the oil industry for environmental protection.

In a story which was published Friday in The Los Angeles Times online edition, Rep. Charles W. Boustany Jr. (R-LA.) called the criminal settlement a “significant first step in the right direction.’’ He added, “Some of the biggest liabilities – particularly the penalty that could come out of the Clean Water Act – are still facing the company.”
